Designer-Makers respond to the Credit Crisis with Hidden Art at Salone Satellite
Milan, April 22-27, 2008
Stand C16, Pavillion 22-24, New Fiera Milano, Rho
Hidden Art UK designers launching new products and prototypes at this year’s SaloneSatellite have responded to the current global economic woes, by either simplifying designs back to basic black and white or by railing against the bleak outlook with uninhibited explosions of colour: from the natural curves and stark outlines of Helena Jonasson’s furniture to the organised chaos of colour and composition of Margo Selby’s Banana Silk Rugs. As usual, the products feature some very eco-friendly approaches to production.
Without Hidden Art, a not-for-profit organisation supporting UK designer-makers, this inventive, upcoming British-based collection would not get the lucrative opportunity to launch their work (and careers) during the Milan Furniture Fair. 2009 marks Hidden Art’s 20th year assisting designers and designer-makers.
The designers on stand in 2009 will be:
Duffy London – Duffy London will be utilising an established approach to incorporating shadows and silhouettes in design, while making their first foray into producing furniture through their new Shadow Chair.
Helena Jonasson – Helena launches LINIE cabinet, a small cabinet with a black edge detail and gently curved doors, draws on the cartoon figure 'La Linea'. Also debuting is FUNKIS drawer unit; fun, friendly, playful and eager to assist.
Kaniez Braganza – Kaniez is launching her Spiral Fabric, utilising unique spiral machine stitching, which results in a new lace like fabric. Tarnished Fabric will also be launched, made from plastic sequins which are made to look tarnished and then sewn in layers onto voile.
Kristian Stringer – Kristian Stringer will be showcasing his new Easy Chair and Sprung Stool.
Margo Selby – Margo, an award-winning British textile designer, launches her new bespoke rug collection made from Banana silk – a new and sustainable yarn made from the fibre of the bananna tree.
Yu Jordy Fu – Jordy utilises her experience as an Architectural Designer to showcase her intricately cut Memory, Angels and Milan Cloud Lamps, taking advantage of recycled paper.
